I think it’s safe to say I’m terrible at keeping resolutions. I make them, I stick to them for anywhere from a day to a month, and then they fall by the wayside as I get lost in my schedule. Sometimes they’re very simple — wake up 5 minutes earlier — and sometimes they are more complicated — smoothies and only really healthy food from now on! — but they never last.
This year, I am doing one thing, attempting to keep it simple, and doing something I have never done before- starting early. I get the initial excitement of starting something new by doing it before the holidays and then, when January 1st hits, I get the renewed excitement of “Yeah! New Year, new challenges!” I’m hoping the two will combine to make this a habit. Fingers crossed!
My resolution for the year is to add at least 30 minutes of yoga at least 4 days per week.
This is a bit of a threefold resolution but it’s starting out simply enough.
Reason 1 is relaxation. Stress and anxiety plague my day-to-day. I carry that tension in my body and often don’t have a way to release it all. The calm and inward focus of yoga will really help me release that tension and hopefully help relieve some of that anxiety.
Reason 2: Flexibility. I’ve been dancing since I was a little girl. But I’ve always been one of the tightest dancers in the room. Flexibility is just not a thing that comes naturally to my body. Add to that an old injury from ages ago that makes stretching harder, and my body is just not about bending. At all. I’m hoping that the yoga will really help loosen me up. even if it doesn’t really increase my flexibility, at least helping relax some of my super tight muscles will help.
Reason 3: Health. The busier my schedule is, the less I work out. Sure, I walk at least 15 minutes nearly every day in commuting time but that doesn’t feel like very much when this time last year, I was training for the Mudderella (hoping to find the time for that again this year!). This will at least build a little bit of movement into my life again.
