DIY Foot Soak

_MG_7385Let me tell you about Wednesday.

The temp was up to above 20 which, given the way things have been going, is something close to a heat wave. With snow on the forecast for Thursday, I thought it was prime time to break out a pair of heels. It had been a gray few days for me mentally and I went into Wednesday going “I’m going to look bomb as hell which will totally make me feel bomb as hell.”
This worked for the morning and through lunch. Then the end of the day came. And along with it, an early gift from nature- that Thursday promised snow.

For those of you who have never been in downtown Chicago, it is alarmingly underprepared for the winters it gets. The sidewalks are all smooth and fancy to look nice. But have almost negative traction. Add some fresh snow into the mix and they actually have negative traction. Add in new heels that I’m still breaking in and that haven’t gotten scuffed on the bottoms yet and now we have a recipe for disaster.

The walk to the train that day was miserable to put it lightly. I had to contort my feet into weird shapes to keep my shoes from flying off leaving me with wet feet.

By the time I got home and had removed the offending shoes, my foot muscles were deeply displeased with me. Every time I went to crack my toes (an old habit from dance that I don’t think will ever go away), my feet cramped something fierce.

Cue this glorious foot soak used as motivation and reward for making it through Thursday. Warm water, Epsom salts, rose petals. Pair with my favorite scented candle and a glass of wine and I am down for some serious relaxation.

  • 1/3 c Epsom salt
  • 1/4 c honey
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 handful of rose petals (optional)
  • Hot water just shy of as hot as you can stand, enough to fill your soaking vessel

Add ingredients, top with hot water, insert feet for as long as you like. I aim for 30 minutes. Pat dry with a towel and add lotion for extra relaxation and softness.
