It’s Monday. That means it’s a post day for me. But as I sat down yesterday to start writing a post, I couldn’t find the words to write anything. It seems petty to sit around talking about outfits and restaurants when members of my community are hurting so deeply, when I am hurting so deeply. So this isn’t a regular post with pretty pictures and outfit details or all the right hashtags or any of that. There’s no “pinnable image,” or anything like that. It’s not the time.
By the time everyone else is reading this, we will be over 24 hours since someone opened fire on a gay nightclub, Pulse, in Orlando, Florida. 50 dead, 53 seriously injured. I could rant endlessly about the way our political and legal systems are handling it and how they have handled things leading directly to this, but everything that can be said on that topic has already been said. And it’s been said better than I could ever say it. Even TIME put together a concise article talking about what we can do to help. So go do it.
I’m at a loss. I’m deeply saddened and deeply hurt.
But I’m also prouder than ever. Seeing the community band together has been, in light of all this darkness, uplifting. Vigils being held. Songs being sung. People jumping into action everywhere. We’re coming together in ways I haven’t seen in my lifetime. And it is beautiful. Keep on hugging, supporting, taking action, using your voices, and more. Keep making ourselves heard. We can accomplish SO MUCH when we work together.
It is not an accident that this happened at a gay club during Pride month. So as we move into our Pride celebrations, everyone be careful. Don’t let them win, continue to celebrate, but please be careful. Support your sisters and brothers. And keep on being proud.
Below, just a few examples of small things we can do within our own communities. My communities include libraries, my queer choir, and the family I have created with the love of my life.
I love you, and support you. You have been a light and a dear friend in my life for many years and it is shining stars like you that give me hope.

We’re all hurting so much right now. Thank you so much for making this about our community. It’s amazing to watch people come together, to watch LGBT communities spread love and create safe spaces for each other. I’ve been devastated ever since I heard the news but I’m looking to our community for love and support and finding it in plenty. ❤

Many hugs to you. It’s always about community. And a people or community united as we are can never be truly defeated. Sending you love and healing vibes as we tackle this beast.

I feel like we’ve all said all we can say but just to make sure we spread the messages as far and wide as we can I’ll say it again…My heart aches for the LGBTQ community, the Muslim community, and our collective allies. 💔 It’s going to take time, reflection, and conversation to grieve and heal. In the meantime I will continue to seek solace from my Unitarian Universalist church family and loved ones. But right now I know one thing for sure…I refuse to let religious perversion and attacks fueled by hatred and fear to divide and conquer. I hope we can all agree on that. Thank you for being you and being brave Dannie!

Thank you for writing this! The senseless violence is just incomprehensible, and watching it over and over again on TV as they analyze it is like nightmare on repeat. My heart goes out to the victims.

I’m so glad I don’t have TV right now. I wouldn’t be able to handle seeing it there as well.

Like you, I felt the same way about constructing a post on the topic. I sit here with my coffee and my cat, so unaffected by the cruelty outside my door. What the hell is happening? I am thoroughly disgusted yet strangely compelled to believe that love is still a strong force in our world –despite the existence of hate. All the best to you, and I thank you for sharing your words.

Thank you for sharing as well.
Despite all the hate, this has been making me want to fly that rainbow flag even higher. love is so much stronger and always will be. Hate simply acts more harshly.

Beautiful post. The Pulse shooting has rocked so many and seeing others take actions is inspiring. It reminds us that there is good in the world. I wanted to write a post about what happened as well, but I had no idea how to even begin. This is incredible written and no one could have expressed this better than you.

Aww Dannie. I don’t know what to write. I can barely see what I’m writing because my eyes are full of tears. I’m so sorry this happened. I don’t know what is wrong with people. Thank you for sharing this.

I love that everyone is volunteering to help in Orlando. No matter their views, they see one simple thing: this was a horrific event and people were killed/hurt. They don’t see that 100 some people of the LBGTQ community were involved, they see them as people. And that is what is so beautiful about it.
