Curls and Color with Hair Loft West Loop

Curls and Color with Hair Loft West Loop | Stile.Foto.Cibo

It’s been a good long while since I did anything new with my hair, and that includes cuts! I tend to neglect my hair between sessions in a salon and the result is usually lots of dead and split ends, sad curls, and just an unhappy time for everyone.

My experience with HAIR LOFT West Loop, however, was phenomenal! I worked with Christian on recommendation of the owner, Ben, and couldn’t be more pleased to report that he did an amazing job with the color, the cut, and the styling. I’m so so happy with my hair now and actually feel confident no matter how it’s styled thanks to a killer cut and a fresh new color look.

We sat down and just chatted hair for a little bit. Christian asked about my general routine, how I style, my last cut, and more of the usual. I showed him some photos to use as inspiration for both color and style and then basically told him “Have fun!” And oh boy did he.

We went over to the color bar where we talked specific shades for me and he mixed my color. We went with a dark chocolate-y brown around the roots which fades to a very light blonde for the middle and ends of my hair.

I love that the color bar is separate from the rest of the salon. That means that if you’re just in for a blowout, you’re not getting suffocated by the smells of color in the next chair over. And there are no mirrors in the color bar so you can’t get nervous as color is being applied. It requires a new level of trust for your stylist but it’s definitely for the better. It makes seeing your color for the first time feel like a big reveal!

Everyone’s least favorite part is waiting for color to set. But with a table full of magazines, tea and coffee, and actually comfy chairs, it’s not the worst experience ever.

Over to the washing station which is equally as beautiful (this whole space is beautiful, let’s be real) to get the color out and then back to the color bar to tone that lightener. This is another point where I was super glad there weren’t any mirrors in the color bar. Just-bleaches hair looks and feels gross so not being able to see it actually kept me way calmer than seeing it in a mirror. Putting that trust in Christian again!

After a little bit more waiting around and a trip to the washing station for shampoo and conditioner, it was finally over to the styling stations where Christian began his masterful work. Cutting layers everywhere, getting my less than happy ends gone, and really giving my hair some wonderful attention while still keeping it long, the way I love it.

A little blow drying and a little bit of curling followed. Christian talked me through some awesome tips for curling my hair which I was able to [sort of] replicate later on my own. I think a big part of it is going to be practice but that’s half the fun sometimes, right?

But now, for the magic:

I absolutely LOVE it! I love the way he styled the curls, I love how the color came out, I love the layers and the length. Absolutely all of it is just perfection. Christian did a truly wonderful job with my mane and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Self Care with Hair Lab @ Hair Loft

LAB @ HAIR LOFT | Stile.Foto.Cibo

Taking time to care for oneself is so so important and definitely a thing we don’t do nearly enough. But it might not be for time, it might be for lack of inspiration in self care. We think of these activities as being things like baths, massages, or other kinds of relaxation-based activities. But what if self care was doing other things for yourself like taking the time to learn how to do your hair really nicely? Taking the time to practice and eventually be able to do something well and quickly. Sometimes, simply looking your best and having done it yourself is a great way to boost confidence and mood.

That’s the idea with LAB at Hair Loft. This complimentary evening allows  group of 10-15 people to come together and learn how to do their hair three different ways to make styling easy and fun! Through a class and then one-on-one styling time, our group of bloggers left with the ability to achieve whatever look we want quickly and easily. It certainly takes time and practice but the end result is totally worth it!

We focused on three styling techniques:

Round Brushing: This one is your basic blowout. Using the heat of the dryer and the motion of the round brush to get a smooth look with some natural wave and bounce.

Curling: Every kind of curl from Shirley Temple all the way to Adriana Lima on the Victoria’s Secret runway can be achieved with the right tool and a little patience!

Smoothing: Got a flat iron? You can make stick-straight locks or even Jacey Duprie chunky waves with the right technique!

I hosted the event with two of my blogger gals, Allie of Allie’s Fashion Alley and Allison of The Snotty Little Bitch. We has a great time with our blogger friends with some sips and snacks, embracing the ability to look silly while we tried to figure out how to do our hair, and so much more. Want to host your own? Check out the LAB page to learn how.

Irresistibly Straight with Irresistible Me

Irresistible Me Hair Straightener | Stile.Foto.Cibo

I’ve been straightening and blowing out my hair on a regular basis for about 8 months now. The art of the blowout took a while to perfect but I think I’m there now. Straightening, however? That’s been difficult. It’s all about having the right straightener and the one I’ve been using is old and, frankly, not very good.

So when Irresistible Me approached me about testing out their professional flat iron, I was there.

Irresistible Me Hair Straightener | Stile.Foto.Cibo

This product is awesome. It heats up super-quick which means I can get right down to business straightening. And I control the temp with an easy-read screen right on the product. It even has an auto-off for when I’m not the brightest and forget to turn it off. It’s basically idiot-proof in the best way.

If you follow me on Snapchat (@dannie54) then you’ve already gotten to hear me rave about this beauty pretty much from the moment I had it. I believe at one point I described it as “amazeballs” so…

Let’s take a look at these results, though, with a before and after comparison:

BeforeAfter

So basically, I’m in love. This was from full curls to straight in about 30 minutes.

Irresistible Me is best known for their extensions, which aren’t really my thing. But based on the quality of this straightener, I can safely say everything is top quality. Check them out for yourself!

As with most people, what I’m using on my body varies from season to season. While I opt for exclusively heavy-moisture products in the winter and pumpkin spice scented everything in the fall, summer is when I spend some time experimenting with my favorites. It’s the perfect time to see what my skin and I both like, have a little fun, and see what’s new on the market!

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Boosters Facial Cleanser, White Tea and Vitamin E

With dry skin all year round, I need a face cleanser that specifically states it won’t over-dry. If it isn’t oil free, all the better. This cleanser has been a lifesaver and I’ve definitely noticed a new brightness in my skin. It smells AMAZING and feels great to boot. I don’t think it will be my winter cleanser and it still occasionally leaves my skin feeling a little tight in places but it’s awesome for these hot summer days. So refreshing.

Lush Yuzu and Cocoa Shower Cream

I got this as a sample at Lush in the Park in early May. I watched them make it and immediately fell in love with the straight up fresh ingredients. They just squeezed mandarins right into the mix to give it that amazing scent and freshness! And in-shower it’s so great. The cocoa butter gives it this silky quality that makes it feel way more luxurious than it actually is. And with continued use, I’ve noticed a huge difference on overall softness. Those nasty scaly bits that formed from winter? They’re gone! And it leaves the whole darn shower smelling so great for hours after.

Ouidad Botanical Boost

I adore this spray. It’s super great for my hair regardless of if I’m blowing it our or letting my curls run wild. It gives my hair that little extra oomph it needs to not go all over the place in Chicago’s darn-near-famous humidity and keeps me feeling fresh and REfreshed every single time I use it. So great!

MyBurberry Eau de Toilette

I posted about getting this amazing scent but I haven’t updated you guys since. It’s been so so excellent. I love the fresh and citrus notes to it and just how perfect it is for warm weather. I’ve been spraying it everywhere, too. My outfit for the day, my hair, and every single pulse point. I’m so obsessed with this scent I would bathe in it if I could. I didn’t think it was possible to love a scent so much but here we are. [swoon]

essie figi nail polish

If high school me could look at current me, she would be disappointed. And it wouldn’t be for career or life or love reasons. It would simply be for the sheer amount of pink in my life. Confessions, I was my high school’s token goth kid, Tripp brand pants and all. Black was my dominant color along with red, line green, and orange. And yet here I am, so many years later, running a freaking style blog and telling you all how much I absolutely adore this soft pink nail polish. But for real, this color is amazing. And you all know how great of a brand essie is. They’re the bomb!

Jergen’s Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer

I feel like every blogger ever has used this lotion. It’s such a beauty staple but that doesn’t change how much I absolutely adore it. I love the light color it gives and, honestly, I love the scent of it. The only thing I’m not a fan of is how long it can sometimes take to dry. Orange tinted sheets are not cute, guys. But such is life. Just means I won’t be snapchatting (@dannie54) in my bedroom until laundry day. Seriously, this is perfect to build that light glow, especially until I can spend a few days of dedicated bum time at the beach.

My beauty regime isn’t that at all. I don’t spend hours in front of a mirror primping. I usually wake up most mornings, half-assedly throw on some mascara, and book it out the door. If I’m being completely honest, I forget to wash my face before bed more often than I remember. And I do my nails with alarming infrequency. But when I do take the time to spend some time, this is what I’m reaching for. All the time, every time.

What are your favorite products? Give me the deets in the comments and I just might feature them next time!

Burberry Birthday Adventure

Burberry Flagship Store Visit | Stile.Foto.Cibo

May might be one of my favorite months of the year. It starts to get warm for real, flowers are everywhere, and my birthday happens! This year, I’m actually celebrating, whereas last year I didn’t do terribly much. So the celebrations began last week with a trip to the Burberry flagship store here in Chicago for a birthday present that I’ve been eyeing for a while: MyBurberry eau de toilette.

The scent is amazing! And the experience was great. We were helped immediately upon entering the store and had just wonderful service. They helped me pick out my scent and then did complimentary makeup service! I’m now obsessed with their concealer and everything.

After we picked the scent and did the makeup, we got to walk around the store while they engraved my bottle with my initials. I found so many pieces that I fell in love with immediately including a gorgeous mulberry microbag and more.

Overall, the experience was amazing and I had so much fun! Enjoy the scroll!

Treat Yourself with PrettyQuick

PrettyQuick Beauty App | Stile.Foto.Cibo

This past week, I gave myself a little “Treat Yourself” kind of day where I focused entirely on self care and things I enjoy that make me happy. Among that included a manicure and letting someone else do my blowout for a change. And I booked them both through my new favorite app, PrettyQuick.

Here’s how it works: Download the app. Make an account. Find a salon. Book your appointment. Go to appointment. Pay through the app.

My first appointment was the mani at Fuga Italian Escape. I’m trying to curb my nail biting and a mani seemed like the way to do that. I booked my appointment the night before and had everything confirmed before I went to bed. Next day I got there and was greeted with tea before going to actually get my mani. The service was amazing and I definitely never would have found this salon if it hadn’t been for PrettyQuick.

Next up was my blowout. Admittedly, I had a harder time booking this one. The cashless payment system was down at the first salon I tried to book and the second one didn’t have any appointments when I was available. But PrettyQuick made it really easy to find a new salon and finally make an appointment at Chroma Salon and Spa in Lincolnwood. Once again, amazing service (this time with coffee) and I left with a great blowout that I didn’t have to do myself!

Basically, this app is my new favorite, maybe even above Instagram. They make beauty easy.

Want to give it a try for yourself? Unfortunately, the app is only for iOS devices. But for those of us who are Apple addicted, go download the app and use code “dannie” to get $15 in beauty services. That’s a free mani!

Full disclosure, I get $5 in credit when you redeem your credit.
This post was not sponsored by PrettyQuick. I’m just in love with the app.

Zoe wanted to join the party for this shoot. So enjoy the puppy shots as well as this amazing blowout and mani!

How to Make Your Lipstick Last through Dinner AND Drinks

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

You know the situation: You’re out on the town. Your makeup looks fly. You feel like you could conquer the world right now. Dinner rolls around, you eat the most delicious pasta you have ever had the pleasure of enjoying, and you pop to the restroom to check that fly makeup.

Disaster. Your lipstick has feathered and faded in the patterns of the pasta you just ate. There’s no fixing this. Your options are either wipe it off and go without lipstick or play the fool, leave what color is left, and walk around like an idiot the rest of the night.

This situation could have been avoided with this tutorial.

You’ll need:

  • Lip balm
  • Your favorite lipstick
  • A single square of toilet paper
  • Corn starch
  • Cotton pad or Q-tip

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

Step 1: Apply lip balm. This is mostly for the good of your lips. Give them some love all night. For those of you who like lip liner, this is where you would apply that. I personally don’t so I go for balm instead.

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

Step 2: First coat of Lipstick. You’re a pro at applying lipstick by this point. Do your worst.

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

Step 3: Blot the Excess. This is there the toiled paper comes in. One sheet is just enough to fold it in half and blot my lips down. Gets the way too much extra off and preps your lips for the next step.

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

Step 4: Cornstarch. Take a cotton pad or a Q-tip and coat it with cornstarch. Take the powder and pat it all over your lips. You’re gonna get some on the skin around your lips. You’re probably going to get some on your robe, too. It happens. Apply the corn starch and blend it in until you can’t see it anymore. I recommend patting versus any motion that will cause friction to keep the lipstick in place.

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

Step 5: Repeat steps 2 and 3. Apply another coat of lippy and blot the excess.

Lipstick Tutorial | Stile.Foto.Cibo

And you’re good to go! I would give it a few minutes to properly dry and set (now would be a good time to get dressed) before taking a sip of anything. Once everything’s settled, you’re good for the night.

What’s your favorite weird makeup trick? Tell me in the comments!
