On the Steps

Back at the beginning of the year, I mentioned my goal for the year was to get my mental health in order. For the month of January, I made myself get into the habit of making my bed every single day. That’s just ingrained in my morning routine now. So February is for a new goal: get moving every single day. Living on the 5th floor, I have it relatively easy. Beyond being able to take the stairs, Zoe and I have been going on really long beach walks the last few days (follow along on snapchat! Username dannie54) and I’m aiming to get back into yoga again. Fingers crossed!

Any other suggestions to work getting moving again into my daily routine? I’d love to hear them!

Stovetop Potpourri and Cozy Fridays

_MG_7100

This grip of cold around Chicago hasn’t quite released yet. And this apartment, while not freezing, is certainly not warm. It’s been rather chilly around here. We’ve pulled out the heated blanket, the flannel sheets, and additional blankets on top of that. To be honest, though, that’s probably my favorite part of winter. The layers. I’m such a blanket fiend. We have no less than three blankets out at any one time with probably half a dozen more hiding away just in case. So finally needing to wrap myself in a blanket all day in order to keep the chill off is less of an inconvenience and more like the best pajama party ever.

Fridays usually mean a day off from office work for me. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have other stuff to get done, it just means I get to do it from the comfort of my own home instead of going out into this freezing nightmare of snow and ice. “Why do I live where the air hurts my face” is forever my mantra throughout January and February. But if I used working from home as an excuse to stay in pajamas all day, I would never get anything done. So I let myself stay in PJs for an extra hour or two while I slurp down some tea. Then it’s time to get dressed and put on some makeup, even if it’s only for me.

This particular friday hss been more freezing than usual, though. So I decided it was time to combat the chill and add some delicious smells to the apartment at the same time. Enter stovetop potpurri. Water, aromatics, boil. You get some steam to warm the place and carry amazing scents around.

Ingredients:

  • The peels of two clementines
  • 2-4 sprigs of pine
  • cinnamon (if you have sticks throw in two. If you have ground like me, add in about a tablespoon)
  • 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract

Steps:

  1. Fill a pot halfway with water and your ingredients. I like using a big pot like one I would use for pasta.
  2. Bring the water to a boil then reduce to a simmer.
  3. Don’t let the water evaporate entirely. Keep adding water if you want to. I like to put the kettle on every hour or so and refresh the boiling water. Keep it running for as long or short as you like. I’ve had mine going for around 3 hours now.

The apartment smells amazing and we have now achieved slightly steamy windows. Nice and toasty warm! Supplement with your favorite tea and blanket and prepare to be ultra cozy.
