As I spend more and more time developing and honing my sense of style, I’ve noticed how much I really love incorporating a little bit of edge into my every day dress. Whether it’s a choker (totally my new favorite trend) or the awesome leather and gold zipper detail on this blazer, I like to have something that’s a little less soft than the usual. Maybe it harkens back to my days as the token goth kid in high school (yes, chain pants were a staple in my closet. no, i don’t have photos) or maybe it’s just something that’s really a part of my personality. Either way, I love living on the edge.

Sunday’s outfit was inspired by Dolled Up With Liz’s post, “Never dull your sparkle!” about styling an entire outfit around a statement necklace. So that is exactly what I did, inspired entirely by her outfit. I know this chambray has been featured in my last three outfit posts. I promise that 1) it’s been clean (we’ve hat a lot of laundry to do lately. And I’ve just been tossing it in) and 2) I will let it rest for a while now. I was just so pumped about it!
The necklace is an impressive Forever 21 find. They’re really stepping up their necklace game. Paired with a simple t-shirt and a maxi-skirt, both of which are older pieces. Now that I think about it, save for the shoes, this entire outfit might be from Forever 21. The shoes are Steve Madden. Nice and neutral.
I was nervous to try such a bold necklace at first — I haven’t been one to take too many big style risks — but boy am I glad I did. I love this piece! It’s going to very quickly become a go-to for a little bit of sparkle on even dull days.
But onto the next and arguably most important part- Dog! We have adopted a dog! Her name is Zoe, she’s about 2, and we think she’s a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix. She’s such a sweetheart. I’ll definitely be sharing stories about her as we get to know each other better. Stay tuned!
This is Zoe. She’s a sweetheart.

–EDIT NOTE– When this post was scheduled, we had only met Zoe, not adopted her yet. I have updated to share that awesome announcement.
Temperatures in Chicago are shamelessly and ruthlessly dropping every single day. Gone are the days of heat waves, replaced by cold snaps that never really snap back. But that isn’t going to stop my lady and I from wandering to the beach. We’ll just bundle up a little more. And then promptly un-bundle to snap some photos. Suddenly coats are infinitely better when they’re a tick sandy and you’re just on the verge of shivering.
And, let’s be serious, there is something seriously wonderful about curling up with a hot cup of tea or coffee after a gorgeous scenic walk on the beach. The best way to nudge the chill away if you ask me.
She preferred to stay bundled. Probably the better choice.
How are you keeping warm and fighting off the cold weather blues?

Sometimes it’s necessary to take off and run with the birds.
I’ve been on a mission this fall: find the perfect leopard flat. I do lots of walking in my commute and sometimes, heels are just not a good idea. I’ve been on the prowl for a leopard flat to keep my feet comfy while still looking nice.
It took lots of trying on shoes and lots of figuring out exactly what I wanted. I definitely wanted something flat. Which ruled out those gorgeous booties up top (though I would be lying if I didn’t say I was still thinking about them). I wanted something with a pointed toe. That nixed most of my options. I wanted something comfortable that I would have no problem sitting at a desk in all day. Those loafers are still in the running. Even though they’re not pointed toe, they weren’t completely rounded so I was willing to let that go.
But I really wanted flats. Loafers are nice and all and those are still on my list of considerations but a pointed toe ballet flat was what I was looking for. And thus, I landed on these beauties. They took a little bit of breaking in at first but I’ve worn them nearly every day since! They’re absolutely perfect.
The reviews on them all say “a little uncomfortable” or refer to blisters. Yes, I did get a blister on one foot. And they were a little uncomfortable after walking around for an entire day. But after a little TLC and a carefully placed band-aid, these are nicely broken in and don’t hurt at all any more.
